The Penny Pot Cafe

As I mentioned last time, cake is one of my favourite things (along with most other sweet treats). One of Mat's favourite things is walking up hills, especially in the Yorkshire Dales or – more commonly since moving to Sheffield - the Peak District. The way that we keep the peace at weekends is to combine these two interests; a few hours walking in the Peak District followed by a cakey reward at a cafe or tearoom before we get the train back to Sheffield.

Yesterday's trip – to make the most of this sudden burst of nice weather – was to Edale in Derbyshire. Now we've been to Edale once before and found a lovely National Trust cafe called 'The Penny Pot Cafe' right near the train station, so I was more than happy to be going back to Edale again. Yesterday's visit was just as good as the first, so I thought I should take the opportunity to tell others about this great little place.

Honey Pie Tearoom

Since moving to Sheffield eight months ago I've been under the impression that the city's a bit thin on the ground when it comes to independent cafes and tearooms. Now, I'm a girl who REALLY likes her cake. And biscuits. Basically anything sweet, so that was a massive disappointment to me. Recently, however – thanks to several days hours spent searching the internet - I've discovered how wrong I was, and now have a list almost as long as my arm of potential cake-havens that I need to go and try out.

The first on the list was the Honey Pie Tearoom. This is a fairly small but fantastically decorated tearoom in the Heeley area of Sheffield, about an hour's walk from home for me and Mat. When we arrived there was only one table free and it stayed busy the whole time that we were there; there's no doubting that the Honey Pie Tearoom is a popular place. The walls are covered in vintage plaques and signs, the tables are covered in polka-dot cloth, and the counter is full to bursting with jars of loose leaf tea, cakes and biscuits. Basically, it's my kind of place.
